OIL PULLING

Oil pulling is a dental technique whereby you swish a tablespoon of oil (I use coconut oil) in your mouth on an empty stomach for 20 minutes.

BENEFITS: Oil pulling should be done on an empty stomach first thing in the morning. It absorbs any toxins and bad bacteria that have accumulated in the mouth overnight. The anti-bacterial properties of coconut oil help remove the bacteria and in turn give stronger gums/teeth. Because the toxins within the mouth enter the rest of the body/bloodstream, they often affect the skin. Removing these toxins helps clear out the skin impurities that can cause spots, dullness and other blemishes. HOW TO OIL PULL:

  1. Put 1-2 teaspoons of coconut oil into the mouth (you can also use olive oil or sesame oil).

  2. Swish for 20 minutes. This is long enough to break through plaque and bacteria but not long enough that the body starts re-absorbing the toxins and bacteria. The oil will get thicker and milky as it mixed with saliva during this time and it should be creamy-white when you spit out. At first, it can be difficult to make it the full 20 minutes, so don’t stress; try it for 5 minutes, then 10 and gradually build it up to 20 minutes.

  3. Spit oil into the BIN! Not in the sink! The oil can thicken and clog pipes. And definitely do not swallow the oil as it is (hopefully) full of bacteria and toxins that are now not in the mouth!

  4. Rinse well with warm water. Warm water seems to clean the mouth better (in my opinion). I swish a few times with warm water to get any remaining oil out of my mouth. Some people recommend swishing with warm salt water.

  5. Brush teeth. Use fluoride-free toothpaste and brush as normal.
